Iconic Rainbow Bridge
The Haleiwa Rainbow Bridge is an iconic landmark that welcomes visitors to Haleiwa Town on Oahu's North Shore in Hawaii.
With its distinctive double arches spanning the Anahulu Stream, this bridge is one of the area's most recognizable symbols, alongside the Haleiwa sign.
While its official name is 'Kamehameha Highway Bridge No. 603', 'Anahulu Stream Bridge' is printed on the bridge itself. But everyone calls it by its nickname 'Rainbow Bridge' because of its unique double-arched design that resembles a rainbow.
Adding to the small beach town vibe, this narrow bridge often requires stopping to let larger buses and trucks pass. Walking across offers scenic views of the stream, ocean, and harbor. And on both sides, you'll find gift shops, food trucks, and restaurants.
It's a great landmark when entering or leaving town, but there's more to it than just a pretty bridge. Let's explore its historical significance and the fun activities you can't miss!
Where it's located
The Rainbow Bridge stands at the northern entrance of Haleiwa Town on Kamehameha Hwy. It's right next to the beautiful Haleiwa Beach Park.
It's about an hour's drive from Honolulu and Waikiki: 40 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from Pipeline or Waimea Bay.
Here it is on the map to help you find it:
Historical significance
The Rainbow Bridge we know today has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. It is one of Hawaii's oldest bridges!
Originally, a wooden bridge over the Anahulu Stream connected the historic Haleiwa Hotel and the railroad.
Then, in 1921, a new concrete bridge was built to facilitate the town's growth as new residences and businesses developed in the area.
Eventually, this new bridge replaced the wooden one making it easier for people and goods to move in and out of Haleiwa, transforming the landscape, and boosting the town's development.

Must-do activities
When visiting the Rainbow Bridge on the North Shore, we recommend three activities. Let us share a bit about each and why you won't want to miss these experiences.
1. Kayak or paddleboard the Anahulu Stream
Whenever friends or family visit us, one of our favorite activities is taking them kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding beneath the Rainbow Bridge to explore the Anahulu Stream. Here's why we love it:
- The views of the bridge and Anahulu Stream are absolutely stunning.
- It's a serene, relaxing, and peaceful experience on the water.
- Entry into the water is easy and accessible for everyone.
- This activity is suitable for all ages and skill levels year-round.
- We often see turtles swimming around, adding to the magical experience.
You can rent single or tandem kayaks or paddleboards from the shops located right by the water, giving easy access to the stream!
Guided group tours are also available, and you can even experience this activity at night with a group on illuminated stand-up paddleboards.
2. Photo opportunity
The Rainbow Bridge is not only a significant landmark but also a great photo opportunity.
Its double-arched design is quite photogenic, providing a picturesque setting over the Anahulu Stream. Grabbing a picture with it in the background will surely bring back wonderful memories of your trip.
Be sure to bring a GoPro waterproof camera to take photos in the water if you go kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding on the stream!
Tip for getting the best shot!
The best place to get a photo with the bridge in the background if you're NOT in the water is by the Haleiwa Harbor: cross the bridge south on Kamehameha Hwy, turn right on Haleiwa Rd., then take the first right turn into the harbor and right again.
3. Jumping off the bridge
While jumping off the bridge isn't for everyone, it's a common sight to see kids enjoying a refreshing dip in the Anahulu Stream below.
If you're feeling adventurous or have kids who love excitement, it can be a thrilling experience!
